So I read an article today about 12 Italian women writing an open letter to the Pope. Their request: Kill the rule of celibacy for priests.
I don’t know what the true intention behind the request is. Some of these women claim to have had sex with priests in the past and are appealing to the natural needs and desires of these priest. I had even some time ago, felt as if priest should be allowed to have sex in order to curve their appetite for young boys. But a pedophile is a pedophile no matter what title he hides behind, and the freedom of sex being taken away should not naturally create an affinity for young boys.
So I have reconsidered my stance on celibacy. There is nothing wrong with it. People become celibate for different reasons, and the one reason that sold me on it was the possibility for greater spiritual enlightenment. It is a challenge for those of us who consider sex as an important routine part of our lives, but it is not a necessity. I read, that a lot of these priest feel a shameful for engaging in sex or at least having the desire to. I guess if these religious institution would stop demonizing sex, people would make more mindful decisions about it. My heart breaks for priests who desire to have healthy hetero or homosexual relationships with other adults, BUT If there are priest who feel like they cannot resist the urge to merge, then it would behoove them to consider another profession.
